Case Study #1
Mary Smith had
4 self help "programs" she wanted to sell on CD. Each program was
between 45 minutes and 60 minutes long. She wanted to include the
CDs with a printed instruction manual. It was determined that, in
the interest of her product credibility that she should voice each
of the programs herself (as opposed to hiring a professional voice
over artist).
We booked her into Studio on two successive days, each
being a 4 hour booking, with the intent of recording 2 programs each
day. Three hours allowed for enough time for her to comfortably record
her material AND edit the occasional mistake. During the editing,
we were also able to "tighten up" some of the longer pauses in her
reading, take out the odd "um" or cough, and generally finish up with
a perfect reading. During the second days editing, Mary decided that
a little introductory background music would be appropriate for each
cassette (repeated at the end to help "bookend" the material). She
auditioned several selections from Black Inc's extensive library of
production music and selected a 30 second piece that she felt
appropriate. It was explained to her that she would have to pay one
off AMCOS fees to use this music.
All the while, Black Inc and Mary
were having discussions as to the packaging. She had very stringent
notions as to how she wanted the printed instruction manual to look.
It was determined that bound folder with CD holders on the back cover
would best suit her presentation. She had already prepared the entire
text on her word processor, complete with font types, graphics, and
pictures. From these materials, collectively, we determined what the
CD label should look like. Each of the four CDs would have a similar
look, with differnet information and colours. Each CD would have the
title of the program. Each CD would have Mary's information on it
(including the copyright symbol). At that point we were able to place
the order with our replicating facility.
Black Inc then took Mary's
material to the printers, ordered the bound folders, began the CD
pressing and printing. Once all the materials were printed and the
CDs duplicated, we assembled the finished product, boxed them up and
shipped them to Mary's warehouse.
Mary was very happy with the service
she received from Black Inc, sold her first shipment of 1000 books
within a month and now regularly emails us further orders. As
we store the CD master in our archive library (along with the print
requirements), we then contact the printer and repeat the entire process,
BUT Mary never has to leave her office!
